In our manufacturing practice, we often encounter situations where customers from the chemical and pharmaceutical industries request equipment that can operate at extreme temperatures without losing filtration efficiency.Heat Resistant Centrifuge with Exhaust Filter Bag: Specificationsof such equipment go far beyond standard factory tables. It's not just a bunch of numbers about rotor diameter or motor power; This is a set of engineering solutions that determine the safety of the process and the purity of the final product. If you are looking for a simple description of a "motorized basket", this article may seem overly detailed. However, for process engineers responsible for implementing slurry separation processes at temperatures above 80°C, understanding the nuances of bag design, seal materials and gas flow dynamics is critical to success.
We've analyzed hundreds of requests and identified one common mistake: buyers often focus on the maximum temperature of the housing, ignoring the heat resistance of the filter element itself and the shaft sealing system. As a result, the equipment fails after three months of operation, and the manufacturer loses batches of an expensive product. In this material we will analyze the real technical parameters that affect reliability, based on operating experience in Russian winters and hot workshop temperatures. We will not use marketing epithets like “high quality” - only facts, tolerances and specific engineering solutions.
The first question that any competent technologist asks is: what is the real operating temperature range for the entire system assembly? Standard centrifuges are usually designed to operate at temperatures up to 60-70°C. When it comes toheat-resistant modifications, the lower bar rises to 90°C, and the upper one can reach 150°C and higher when using special designs. But here lies an important nuance that is rarely written about in general catalogs. The temperature specified in the data sheet often refers only to the drum material (usually AISI 304 or 316L stainless steel). The filter bag and sealing elements may have completely different limitations.
In our practice, there was a case when a client purchased a centrifuge with a declared heat resistance of up to 120°C, but used standard polypropylene bags. The result is predictable: after two weeks of operation at 95°C, the bags lost their strength, deformed under the influence of centrifugal force and broke, which led to solids entering the filtrate and contaminating the line. Therefore, the specification must clearly separate temperature limits for metal parts and soft parts.
For applications ranging from 90°C to 140°C, we recommend the use of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE/Teflon) filter bags. PPS has excellent chemical resistance and can withstand constant temperatures up to 190°C, making it an ideal choice for hot slurries. PTFE goes further, operating up to 260°C, but the cost is significantly higher and the mechanical tensile strength requires a special support design. It is important to understand that the choice of bag material dictates not only the temperature, but also the method of its attachment. At high temperatures, traditional rubber seals lose their elasticity and begin to leak. Here it is necessary to switch to high quality silicone seals or, in extreme cases, to graphite packings, although the latter require more frequent maintenance.
The material of the case also plays a role. For aggressive environments at high temperatures, standard AISI 304 steel may not be sufficient due to the risk of intergranular corrosion. In such specifications we always specify AISI 316L or even duplex steels if the environment contains chlorides. The client must be aware: saving on steel grade at high temperatures is a direct path to through corrosion of the drum within a year. We've seen photos of drums where the wall thickness has decreased by 30% after just 18 months of use in a hot, acidic environment. This is not a theoretical risk, but real failure statistics.
When ordering equipment, be sure to request a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for all contact parts, including the adhesive used for bag seams. A regular thread stitch can withstand the heat, but the glue holding the knot in place may melt. In our specifications we specify the use of heat resistant welds for synthetic fabrics or special high temperature adhesives certified for food or chemical processing. Do not rely on the manager’s words “everything will hold up” - require documentary evidence of the temperature conditions for each component of the filtration unit.
The central element of the entire system is the filter bag itself. In the context of a heat-resistant centrifuge, its design is fundamentally different from standard options. The main task of such a bag is not just to retain solid particles, but also to maintain its geometry under the influence of high temperature and gigantic centrifugal forces (up to 1000-2000 G). Conventional bags shrink when heated or, conversely, stretch, which leads to a violation of the fit in the basket and sediment breakthrough.
The bag specifications should include the following key parameters:
Particular attention should be paid to the “exhaust” system. The term "exhaust bag" implies the ability to easily dismantle the sediment along with the bag or effective purging. In hot processes the sediment often becomes caked or sticky. Our design includes special handles or loops made of heat-resistant material (such as Kevlar threads) that allow the operator to safely remove the hot bag of sediment without contact with the heated surfaces of the basket. This is a matter of not only convenience, but also labor safety.
We've encountered a problem where customers have tried to use regular nylon bags, thinking they won't mind the short-term heat. Nylon melts at about 220°C, but begins to lose strength at 150°C. In one case, at a process temperature of 130°C, a nylon bag “floated” right during the acceleration of the centrifuge, wrapping itself around the shaft. The consequences were catastrophic: imbalance, destruction of the bearing assembly and shutdown of the production line for a week. This example clearly shows why the specification must strictly define the fabric material with a temperature margin of at least 20-30°C from the working temperature.
Another important aspect is the electrical conductivity of the fabric. When working with flammable solvents at elevated temperatures, the risk of static electricity increases many times over. The specification must include a requirement for the use of antistatic threads woven into the fabric structure of the bag, with mandatory grounding through the metal neck ring to the centrifuge body. Ignoring this setting may result in a solvent vapor explosion inside the housing.
Working with hot products places additional demands on the dynamic characteristics of the centrifuge. The viscosity of the suspension directly depends on temperature. What is a thick paste at 20°C can become a flowing liquid at 90°C. This changes the drum loading profile and the nature of vibrations. The motor and variable frequency drive (VFD) specifications must take this factor into account.
Engine power is not selected “by eye”. For heat-resistant centrifuges, we use a power reserve factor of at least 1.3-1.5 compared to standard models of the same capacity. Why? Because when starting a hot but quickly cooling mass (if there is a delay in unloading), the torque can increase sharply. In addition, bearing units operate under conditions of increased thermal radiation from the basket. Even with a heat shield, the temperature in the bearing area can exceed the standard 40-50°C.
In our specifications we specify the use of bearings with increased radial clearance (class C3 or C4) and special high-temperature lubricants. Conventional lithium grease will leak or coke if exposed to temperatures above 80°C for prolonged periods, causing the shaft to seize. We prefer to use polyurea or synthetic lubricants that are durable up to 150°C. One of our clients saved on bearings by installing standard models, and after 4 months suffered complete spindle failure due to loss of lubricating properties. The renovation cost three times the original savings.
The speed control system also requires a special approach. At high temperatures, acceleration should be smoother to avoid thermal shock to the bag material and sudden changes in pressure on the fabric. The VFD must be programmed to match the temperature profile of the process. For example, if booting occurs at elevated temperatures, the overclocking algorithm should be different from the algorithm for cold booting. Modern controllers allow you to enter temperature correction of acceleration and deceleration profiles. This is not just an “option”, but a necessity to extend the life of the filter element.
Rotor balancing is another critical point. Heat-resistant centrifuges undergo dynamic balancing not only in a cold state, but also taking into account the thermal expansion of materials. The linear expansion coefficient of stainless steel differs from that of, for example, titanium or special alloys. If the basket is made of composite materials or has a bimetallic structure, balancing must be carried out within the operating temperature range. We carry out warm-up test runs before shipping to ensure that there are no resonant frequencies in the operating speed range.
Operator and environmental safety when working with hot chemicals is priority #1. The design of a heat-resistant centrifuge with a fume bag must prevent any leakage of vapors and splashes. The centrifuge housing is completely closed, with a sealing system for the loading and unloading hatch. Here again the issue of seal materials arises.
Standard rubber gaskets (EPDM, NBR) have a limited temperature range. EPDM is good up to 130-150°C, but does not resist oil well. NBR holds oils, but only up to 100-110°C. For versatile heat-resistant solutions, we use silicone seals (up to 200°C) or fluorine rubber (Viton/FPM), which combines high temperature resistance (up to 230°C) and excellent chemical resistance. The specification must clearly state: “Hatch seals are made of FPM.” Replacing them with cheap analogues is unacceptable.
The ventilation and exhaust system is integrated directly into the casing. Since the process occurs at elevated temperatures, the volume of expanding gases and vapors will be greater than at room temperature. The exhaust fan performance must be calculated taking into account thermal convection. Insufficient exhaust power will increase the pressure inside the casing and squeeze out vapors through the shaft seals. We recommend installing pressure sensors inside the housing that block the centrifuge from starting or stop it if the permissible pressure is exceeded.
Overheat protection also includes thermal insulation of external surfaces. Centrifuge housing operating at 120°C poses a burn hazard to personnel. The specification should include double walls with an air gap or a layer of mineral wool between the inner chamber and the outer decorative casing. The temperature of the external surface should not exceed 45-50°C according to labor protection standards. We carry out thermal imaging inspection of each assembled machine to ensure that there are no “hot spots” on the body.
An important safety element is the emergency braking and locking system. If a filter bag breaks or a basket collapses inside a confined space with hot product, the consequences can be severe. Vibration sensors installed on the bearing units should instantly stop the drive when the values go beyond the normal limits. In addition, the system must have a mechanical lock for opening the hatch until the rotor stops completely and the pressure inside the chamber decreases to atmospheric pressure.
When purchasing industrial equipment for the Russian market or EAEU countries, the key issue is compliance with technical regulations. The heat-resistant centrifuge is subject to several regulations of the Customs Union: TR CU 010/2011 “On the safety of machinery and equipment”, TR CU 020/2011 “Electromagnetic compatibility” and, when operating in hazardous areas, TR CU 012/2011.
Having an EAC (Eurasian Conformity) certificate is a prerequisite for legal operation. However, a simple “tick” in the document is not enough. The product passport must reflect real parameters confirmed by test reports. Particular attention is paid to the section “Operation under special conditions”. If a centrifuge is marketed as heat-resistant, the certificate must indicate the specific temperature range in which it has been tested. Often manufacturers certify the machine only for room temperature, and indicate heat resistance only in the advertising brochure. This creates a legal conflict: in the event of an accident, the insurance company may refuse to pay, citing operation outside the certified mode.
For export to Europe, a CE certificate and a declaration of conformity with the ATEX directive are required (if there is a risk of explosion). European standards (eg EN 12637 for centrifuges) have stringent requirements for protection against product release and structural stability. Our specifications are initially developed taking into account these requirements, which allows us to supply equipment both to Russia and to EU countries without significant modification of the design.
It is also worth mentioning the ISO 9001 standard, which regulates the manufacturer’s quality management system. Purchasing equipment from a factory that does not have this certificate carries the risk of unstable quality of welds and assembly. In our practice, we have repeatedly opened competitors' centrifuges and found welding defects in the internal seams of the basket, which inevitably lead to cracks during cyclic heating and cooling. Having an ISO 9001 certificate from a supplier is a guarantee that every stage of production is controlled.
When placing an order, request a copy of the product passport with stamps and signatures, as well as an instruction manual in Russian, adapted specifically for your model. Typical instructions often do not contain important warnings when working with hot media.
A striking example of this approach is the company’s activitiesWuxi Kaisheng Electric Power and Petrochemical Equipment Co., Ltd..
